Masami Eiri (英利 政美, Eiri Masami), is the key designer of Protocol 7. While working for Tachibana Laboratories, he illicitly included code enabling him to control the whole protocol at will and "embedded" his own consciousness in said protocol. Consequently, he was fired by Tachibana Labs, and was soon found dead on a railway, having seemingly committed suicide. It is his belief that the only way for humans to evolve further is to absolve themselves from their physical limitations and live as digital entities.

In Layer 12, Eiri becomes infuriated by Lain's resistance and attempts to manifest himself physically, becoming an abominable floating creature sprouting a prehensile tongue and bizarre fleshy growths all about his misshapen body. Fortunately, before Eiri is able to harm Lain or Alice, Lain smashes him into a bloody pulp by telekinetically throwing all of her hardware and equipment at him.

After Lain resets both The Wired and reality (it's unclear if they are in fact the same), he is seen grumbling on his way to work for Tachibana, idly threatening to quit.

Memory is a major theme in Serial Experiments Lain. Lain has the ability to affect reality through manipulation of people's memories, once during Layer 08 and most notably during the reset.

A popular quote by Lain about memory is as follows:

A memory is only a record. You just have to rewrite that record.

This theme is clear in the text on the Visual Experiments Lain page on Layer 07 Society. This appears to be a journal entry written by Lain and shows evidence of the unreliability of her memory. It is reproduced here with the grammatical errors present in the original:

Last Sunday, I went out with my family.
We went to our relative's house in Fujisawa by train. All of us together.
We left at the time I usually leave for school.
On our way to the station, my mother noticed that she forgot something,
so we went back to the house.
It was the first time we went to their house in Fujisawa--No. I was mistaken.
We've been there several times. I just forget things sometime.
Meeting my uncle and aunt. I greeted them saying "Nice to meet you" by mistake,
and they laughed at me.
I don't remember what happened while I was in the train.
But I think I was hearing my father and mother talk quietly about the medicine
all the way.
I was hearing it absent-mindedly.
Then I began to feel as if I was at school and I felt sick.
I endured it all the way through. Meeting my uncle and aunt,
I said "Hello." No, I said "Nice to meet you." Was my father and mother there?
Last Sunday, I went out alone.
I went to relative's house in Fujisawa alone.

There are several uncertainties in Lain's memory in what at first appears to be a simple account of a day out with the family. Firstly, she does not recall going to her relative's house in Fujisawa before, but she thinks this was not the first time. Next, she has the impression that she is at school rather than on a train. Then, she mistakes which sentence she greeted her relatives with. Finally, she takes the entire premise apart, stating that her parents were not there and she had gone out alone.

There is no way of knowing precisely what happened, as we only have an unreliable account to go by. This passage, therefore, shows how easily faulty memory can complicate the truth and one's perception of reality.

In the final episode, Yasuo makes a final reference to Proust's In Search of Lost Time when he says that he and Lain should have some tea with madeleines. The book uses madeleines to contrast voluntary and involuntary memory.
A recurring theme throughout the Serial Experiments Lain franchise is the question of Lain's identity. She displays several different personalities in the anime and often appears in two places at once, suggesting that there is more than one Lain.

Lain repeatedly asks herself "Who am I?" or convinces herself "I am myself!" in order to assert her identity. However, as she is the product of the human collective unconscious through the Wired, it is natural for her to take on different identities in the minds of each user of the Wired. A scene in Layer 08 shows a vast number of chattering Lain mannequins that represent all the forms of Lain in other people's eyes.
The project is likely used as an example to illustrate the power of the Wired and of consciousness over the real world.

The Schumann resonances are mentioned in Layer 09. They are a set of peaks in the electromagnetic field spectrum of the Earth. In Serial Experiments Lain, it is proposed that these resonances can affect the human brain directly and provide a means to connect to the Wired without using any devices.

These resonances are what allow the Psyche chip to function. Eiri modified Protocol 7 to allow people to connect to the Wired through the Schumann resonances, and was fired from Tachibana Labs as a result. It is possible that he led the Knights to distribute the Psyche chip to fulfill his ideal of connecting the human race into a neural network for the Earth.

Karl and Lin Sui-Xi work for the above "Office Worker" in tracking down and murdering all of the Knights. They are not told the true plan, but they know that Eiri Masami is involved. They say that they "don't need a Wired God".]

The Men in Black make their first appearance in Layer 02 in which Karl conspicuously watches Lain from behind a lamp post, notably without his eyepiece. They re-appear in the next episode in front of the Iwakura residence just as Mika has returned, much to her confusion and anger. In response to Mika's threat that she would call the police, Karl and Lin tell her that she had never seen them, nor had they ever been there.

In the next layer the Men in Black show up once again at the Iwakura residence, this time at the climax of Lain's fevered activity on the Wired. Angered by their intrusion, Lain yells at them to "go away" and causes Lin's eyepiece to malfunction, wounding him as well. This causes both of the agents to flee.

They are noticeably absent from Layer 05, returning in the sixth to confront Lain in person. She accuses them of being part of the Knights, but Karl simply tells her to "get down". Seconds later her coolant system explodes, shattering her window. Lain accuses the Men in Black of the act but Karl tells her that they planted a parasite bomb in her coolant system. Lain is still not convinced that the Men in Black are innocent, and Karl states again that it was the work of the Knights. The Men in Black depart, leaving Lain speechless and shocked.

In the next layer they intercept Lain as she returns from class. They request that she come with them, and promises that they do not intend to harm her. They escort her to the Boss, witnessing Lain's shift in identity in the process when she is mercilessly questioned. As the more assertive Lain persona excuses herself, Karl tells her that she "is what is dangerous". The boss tells the Men in Black that something interesting is taking place, and that the three of them should observe the events to come.

The Men in Black do not resurface until the tenth layer, in which the identity of the Knights are released worldwide by Lain. The pair assassinate Takuyoshi Masuoka, injecting a lethal substance into his neck. Subsequently, a mass suicide of the Knights takes place.

In Layer 12, Karl suspects that they have been betrayed by their employer due to his contact with Masami Eiri. He also believes that Eiri still lives despite his supposed suicide, to the bewilderment of his partner. Moments later, they are approached by their Boss, who confirms Karl's suspicions. Karl recounts that they had been told to escape -- the boss says smugly that it should be somewhere "...where there is no electric wires and no electromagnetic waves from satellites.” Lin responds with outrage, saying that there is no such place on earth. Karl asks his erstwhile client what will happen when the real world merges with the Wired without devices. The boss simply replies that something "wonderful" will happen, and that he is looking forward to it. When he leaves, Lin is suddenly stricken with inexplicable pain and begins screaming in fear. He then collapses and begins convulsing, his body contorting wildly. Karl rushes to his aid, shocked to find an image of Lain in Lin's retina. He then realizes that his partner is dead. Moments later Karl is stricken by a similar terror and anxiously scans his surroundings before being confronted by a shadowy image. Karl lets out a similar horrified scream as the visage closes in, perhaps meeting the fate of his partner.

After the reset in Layer 13, they are seen working as construction workers.

Karl is voiced by Takumi Yamazaki in the Japanese version and Jamieson Price in the English version. Iwakura Yasuo (岩倉 康男 Iwakura Yasuo) is the surrogate father of Iwakura Lain.

He's a Tachibana Labs employee, seen working on IPv7 with Masami Eiri in a flashback. He is proficient with computers and has a high-end NAVI with multiple screens at home.

In Layer 01 Lain approaches him -- a rare occurrence, according to Yasuo -- and asks for a new NAVI. He is amused by and encourages his daughter's new-found interest for NAVIs and the Wired, approving her request due to her own machine being rapidly outdated and that she should not be afraid of the growing societal emphasis on the Wired. He asks Lain why she is interested, and she replies that she has to meet a friend.

In the next episode, Yasuo is first seen engaging in tonsil hockey with his wife while Lain watches. He tells her that her NAVI has arrived, and Miho says to clean up quickly due to the hardware blocking the way. Yasuo offers to set the NAVI up for Lain after dinner, commenting that the new model is so powerful that he would like to use it himself. His daughter asks if he can set it up now, surprising him, but he complies. Just before Lain begins using her NAVI, he warns her not to use it too much with kids, championing the importance of more 'advanced' communication systems in more mature relationships. His daughter does not reply, instead addressing her NAVI, and Yasuo says that she can show off her new NAVI to her friends.

In Layer 03 he interrupts Lain before she can read her mail, asking her if she has gotten used to her NAVI. When she doesn't respond he asks if there's something wrong. She shows him her new device and asks if he knows what it is. He responds coldly that he doesn't know.

In the next layer he is first seen watching Lain's flurry of activity on her NAVI. He confirms to Miho over dinner that Lain is acting "weird". Later in the episode he confronts Lain and warns her that the Wired is just a communications platform, and should not be mixed up with the real world. Lain responds firmly, saying that "The border is not so well-defined. Soon, I'll be able to enter it and I'll be metamorphisized completely with full range and motion," and when he says that even the newest commercial NAVI cannot simulate reality, his daughter states that she can because she modified it. Yasuo asks if that is because of her Psyche chip, and Lain assures that she will always be herself.

Yasuo is less prominent in the fifth episode, paying little attention to Mika when she asks if Lain was in Shibuya earlier. However, in Lain's room he manifests as a pale, ethereal figure and she asks if he is really her father. He talks about the Wired, and theorizes that the development of electricity and phones, which brought about the Wired must have created another world. They then discuss the existence of a God, only a concept in the real world while a Deus-like entity may lurk in the Wired, of power "...that is written of in myths". He then says that it is possible that such an entity could affect the real world, perhaps by a "prophecy".

In Layer 06, Yasuo is shocked by the changes in Lain's room, pockmarked with puddles of water and filled up almost completely with hardware. His concern is magnified when she does not seem to notice him. Yasuo does not appear in the next episode, though the Boss mercilessly interrogates Lain using details of her supposed family.

After not appearing for four episodes Yasuo bids Lain farewell, addressing her as "Miss Lain". He says that "our work is finished," and that she should have it figured out for herself now. Lain doesn't respond. He pities that he could not have done more for her in such a short time, but says that she is now free to become whatever she wishes, or rather, she was always free. Yauso goes on to say that though he was not allowed to say goodbye, he loved her. Lain is still speechless, and her 'father' says that he did not enjoy pretending to be a family, but says that he envied a being like Lain. As he leaves, Lain begs him not to leave her alone. Without turning to face her, he says "Alone? You're not alone. If you connect to the Wired, everyone will welcome you. That's the sort of being you were". With that, Yasuo and the rest of the Iwakura family disappear.

In Layer 13, the reset returns the Iwakura family to normalcy. He tells Miho to make sure to receive and pay for a package. "Computer parts again?" she says. He doesn't reply. Yasuo is the only person that notices Lain's disappearance. He appears later, looming over a despaired Lain when she desperately questions her existence. Both Lain and Yasuo appear seated at a floating table. He says that Lain doesn't need to wear that anymore. Lain nervously asks if "knows," and that "I...everyone". Her father interrupts her, saying with a knowing smile that "You love them? Isn't that right?" Lain begins to cry, and Yasuo says that he'll "...make us some nice tea next time. Hey, with some madeleines! Definitely. They're great."

Nezumi most likely serves the function of illustrating how the Wired and organisations like the Knights can affect people. He tries to merge the Wired with reality through his equipment, imitating people like Lain who can access the Wired device-less because of the Psyche chip. However, this method not only works very poorly but also causes him to lose touch with reality.

His death can be interpreted in many ways. Perhaps it was an accident brought on by his focus on the Wired while wandering in the real world. Perhaps the Knights assassinated him because he found their communication channels. Perhaps he ended up abandoning the flesh to be able to access the Wired more perfectly.
her utterly asocial and lonely sister.

In the second layer, Mika is curious of Lain's newfangled interest in NAVIs and the Wired, at first commenting on Lain's vocal interactions with her NAVI as talking to her 'imaginary friend'. She reminds her sister that she will be late for school, and later watches her father set up Lain's new NAVI, but feigns disinterest when he notices her eavesdropping.

Mika encounters the Men in Black at her door in the third episode, and threatens to call the police; they simply respond that she never saw them, nor were they ever here. She later tells her mother to call the police if the shady pair ever return. Mika visits Lain's room, only to find her sister tinkering very adeptly with computer hardware and wearing nothing but her underwear. Lain says that she heard that she had to look out for static electricity, so she decided to take her clothes off. At Mika's bewildered response, Lain happily welcomes her sister home.

In Layer 04, Mika only comments that Lain is "weird", perhaps due to her confusing shifts in personality and demeanor, as well as her sudden interest and incredible skills in computing.

In Layer 05 Mika is subjected to many strange phenomena, culminating in being repeatedly told to "fulfill the prophecy" and hallucinating due to the influence of the Wired. She eventually loses her mind spends the next few episodes making random noises and hanging around pointlessly until Layer 09, when she begins to make modem noises. She disappears in Layer 10 along with the rest of Lain's surrogate family.

After the reset she is restored to her normal life.

In Layer 03, Lain receives a Psyche processor from JJ that she later attaches to her NAVI. This allows her to access the Wired without a device.

Lain's NAVI eventually grows to fill her entire room, expanding to include a complex cooling system, several holographic screens as well as normal ones, and large numbers of cables. Notably, a pressure gauge on the cooling system is stamped with "mebious.co.uk", a URL that has been registered by a fan of Lain.
The opening theme of the Serial Experiments Lain anime, by the band Bôa.
Has 4 versions: regular, TV size, acoustic, and Cyberia mix.
Lyrics
And you don't seem to understand<br />
A shame you seemed an honest man<br />
And all the fears you hold so dear<br />
Will turn to whisper in your ear<br />
And you know what they say might hurt you<br />
But you know that it means so much<br />
And you don't even feel a thing

I am falling<br />
I am fading<br />
I have lost it all

And you don't seem the lying kind<br />
A shame then I can read your mind<br />
And all the things that I read there<br />
Candlelit smile that we both shared<br />
And you know I don't mean to hurt you<br />
But you know that it means so much<br />
And you don't even feel a thing

(I am falling<br />

Lin is voiced by George Nakata in the Japanese version and Bob Buchholz in the English version.

The Men in Black do not resurface until the tenth layer, in which the identity of the Knights are released worldwide. The pair assassinate Takuyoshi Masuoka, injecting a lethal substance into his neck. Subsequently, a mass suicide of the
