Plot:

==Introduction==
SE: L is a postcyberpunk, postmodern sci-fi TV anime from 1997 and has long since faded from popular attention. However, many of its points about technology, the Internet and their role in society are still relevant. By comparing the vision it presents with the place of technology in the real world, the differences and similarities between predictions and reality can be seen.

==Literature review==
In one essay, an analysis in the context of the country where SE: L was made (Tribbett, 2010). Through a study of the Japanese tradition of social hierarchy and social groupings, and its contrast with the lack of distinction and individualism on the Internet, known as the “Wired” in-setting, Tribbett shows that the Wired allows people to remove their social masks and show behaviour “more based upon a person’s ‘true self’” (p2-4). Tribbett illustrates that the role of the Wired can be the cause of loss of social identity as well as a refuge for people who are already isolated and uncomfortable with communicating by normal means. For example, the protagonist Lain, who was “unable to develop her understanding of the hierarchical form of socialization” due to isolation from her family and peers (p4-5), grows to rely on the Wired. This study of SE: L from the perspective of Japanese social norms is highly relevant to understanding the role of technology in such a society, but the unknown source of this analysis calls its reliability into question.

Caromba and van Heerden (2007) examine SE: L as a visual medium. They note that Lain’s computer, called a “Knowledge navigator” or “Navi” in-setting, becomes a “technological monstrosity” which covers her entire room over the course of the series (p3), showing the growing dominance of technology and its influence on children. The foundations of society, according to SE: L, are the connections between people, but Caromba and van Heerden state that “become dependant [sic] on the Wired for any form of connection whatsoever” and technology becomes a staple in all social interaction (p10) – at this point in the plot, if the Wired disappears, society would collapse. The focus is on society’s increasing reliance on technology, which makes this reference appropriate. As a secondary source analysis, it is an effective way of interpreting the series from the audience’s point of view.

There are several interviews that can shed light on the producers’ original intentions. In one of them, character designer ABe comments that the depiction of swirling colours in the shadows are meant to show that the Wired is “still there beneath the surface” in the real world, and the director Ueda confirms that the series portrays the merging of the real and the virtual worlds and that there are characters who are “stuck in the Wired” (2000), showing the dangerous attraction people may have to technology. While there is less relevant material in the interviews, which focus more on the development process, this provides some insight into the intended meaning behind the work. Because this is an interview, the information the interviewees give should be close to the truth. However, the original is in Japanese, and some meaning may have been changed or lost in the translation to English.

==Setting and supporting cast==
There can be little doubt that SE: L places an emphasis on technology. Almost constantly, characters are seen interacting with some form of digital media, be it a cell phone, Navi or even a mechanical “drug” known as Accela. Even when they are not, abstract effects in shadows in the real world scenes show the omnipresence of the Wired. The network coverage has grown to the point where in Layer 12 when the “men in black” wish to escape from the influence of the Wired, they discover that there is “no such place on earth” where the Wired does not exist.
The society in Lain’s world begins as something ordinary and easily recognisable as being similar to our own. Children go to school, talk to friends, text message each other under the tables during class, and other common practices. In Layer 01, a small group of girls gather around Lain, closer to each other than they are to her, and Lain acts shy and insecure. When she says that she is bad with computers and has not checked her email for a long time, her classmates are incredulous. In their society, like ours, using computers is considered a basic skill.
Another notable aspect of technology portrayed in SE: L is online role-playing games. The game known as PHANTOMa is popular amongst young characters, and the game-play essentially involves defeating other players in virtual battles. One player remarks that “nobody knows why it’s fun”. It serves no purpose beyond entertainment, yet somehow, players can become so accustomed to the mechanisms of the game that, as seen in Layer 04, they may respond to threatening situations by instinctively reaching for virtual weaponry and in-game voice commands. This can be considered a reflection of the younger generation’s tendency to obsess over gaming.

Visually, SE: L is noticeably abstract in its representation of environments. The real world is drawn in a minimalistic way, with limited colours and most structures represented by shadows on a white background. The Wired, however, is based on a black background and is considerably more colourful. The contrast of dark and light evokes an association with the yin-yang, a symbol showing two distinct but united realities. Indeed, one of the main themes of SE: L is whether the Wired can be considered another reality, and each of the characters presents a different viewpoint. One particularly notable view made by the former president of Tachibana Labs, a Navi manufacturer, is that the Wired is a more advanced upper layer of reality. Most people, however, treat it only as a method of communication and information transfer.

The ways people interact with the Wired are represented symbolically as well. In Layer 06, a Wired user manifested as a mouth informs Lain that most users only have an ear. This can be a reflection of the 90-9-1 participation imbalance, also known as the 1% rule (Arthur, 2006). The ears represent the passive consumers of information, the “listeners”, who make up around 90% of each community. The mouths are the active participants, who create or distribute information by “talking”, and form around 9%. Those who like Lain herself can manifest completely in the Wired represent the 1% of the community who start projects and are essentially the core participants. By this rule, 90% of the activity of any given community is created by 1% of the members. While Lain does not appear to participate much online, somehow all the Wired users know about her. This can be seen as a depiction of how quickly one can rise to fame online.

==The development of Lain==
While she is initially one of the few people in her environment unable to use computers well, after receiving a new Navi from her father, Lain becomes more and more skilled at using and even modifying them. This takes place over three episodes and apparently a corresponding number of days, although time is not clearly represented in SE: L. Technology appears to integrate extremely easily into a person’s life.

Along with her computer skills, Lain’s confidence in communication increases, at least through technological means such as text messaging. This change is even more noticeable when she is on the Wired, almost to the point of being a separate personality. This can be seen as an example of the online disinhibition effect, which allows people to adopt a different and often more open or aggressive persona online in “an attempt to understand and explore oneself” (Suler, J. 2004), and which Tribbett stated as “more based upon a person’s ‘true self’”(p4). One of the functions of the Wired is to allow free and anonymous expression, which is especially important to isolated people like Lain, who goes on to question her own identity. The change Lain develops online barely improves her interactions in the real world, leading her to become increasingly reliant on technology for communication. Considering Japanese culture and its emphasis on the separation of one’s public and private faces, Lain’s behaviour online is more similar to her inner personality than to the persona she displays when interacting with her friends offline.

Due to her assertiveness and her inexplicable fame on the Wired, Lain is soon acquainted with everyone and somehow “connected” with them through the Wired. This online friendship is somewhat similar to how people now have many more friends on the Internet through sites such as Facebook than they may be familiar with in real life. However, Lain comments in Layer 12 that one of her classmates in particular is very important to her, because they were friends even before she had connected with everyone else through the Wired. The series, like most people in the real world, agrees that a direct, face-to-face friendship cannot be replaced by friends online.

In Layer 08, Lain is confronted with an issue. People believe that she has leaked information that they wished to keep private. As she walks through the school, she finds everyone staring at her accusingly. This shows the dangers of sharing personal information online, but at the same time gives evidence that it is easy to let a few secrets slip when behind a mask of anonymity on the Wired. In response to this, Lain opts to use her newfound power and expertise to erase all evidence of the private information leaked onto the Wired, consequently causing the incident to fade from everybody’s memory.

SE: L covers many of the issues regarding the role of technology, particularly the Internet, in society. Some elements, such as the proliferation of handheld digital devices and the ubiquity of wireless Internet access, were almost prophetic. The increasing popularity of online gaming was already evident when SE: L was produced in 1996-97. Influences of technology on interpersonal relationships were also predicted quite remarkably, especially the portrayal of the online disinhibition effect, the way instant inexplicable online fame can occur, and how personal information leaked onto the Internet can spread equally quickly.

==Justification==
Tribbett’s analysis of SE: L in 2010 explains the reasons for isolated or shy people such as Lain to be attracted to the Wired as a way to connect with others. However, it fails to take into account Lain’s conclusion that direct contact with others cannot be replaced by online interaction. Similarly, Caromba and van Heerden’s 2007 essay notes the increasing significance of technology in the society of SE: L and in Lain’s life but exaggerates the importance of technology in communication, neglecting how the characters still talk normally on a daily basis. The transcript of the interview confirms that the creators intended to portray the omnipresence of the Wired and the dangerous lure it can have to young people, but there is limited information provided overall.

==Conclusion==
Serial Experiments: Lain portrays technology in a neutral way, showing that it can be helpful in developing interpersonal relationships and facilitate information transfer. It also, however, warns that reliance on technology and careless use of the Internet can have damaging effects on society. There is also an acknowledgement that the expansion of the Internet and increasing use of technology are inevitable, and that most incidents that happen are, like the leaked private information in SE: L, forgotten in a single moment.

It does not have a single author, but a production staff headed by　'''Acura Honda''' (本田あきら) from AX magazine. It was originally published in 1999, and reissued in 2013. The contents of the 2013 edition appear to be unaltered from the original, with the exception of the staff credits page.

It includes many screencaps, production art (i.e. layouts and storyboards), and information about the anime's production process. It also contains several original illustrations and staff interviews. Most of the production art and original illustrations are by [[Takahiro Kishida]]. The production art is printed in frustratingly small dimensions, but the original illustrations take up full pages or two-page spreads. A crowded street at night in Tokyo's [[Shibuya]] district. A voice asks "Why did you come here, You'd better come here".

[Title: Weird Layer:01]

A breathless teanage girl drops her school bag as passersby point and giggle. The scene cuts to a floating text which reads "Why do you have to do this?" and then "You have to think of yourself". A man and woman pass near the building. He is trying to get her to go "somplace fun" with him.

We now see the girl on the roof of a building. She removes her glasses and positions herself on the edge with her arms outstreched. We see here smiling mouth as she says something inaudible. Again we see floating text "I don't need to be here". Then she falls from the building. The lovers are interrupted in mid-kiss as the girl's body is crushed by a falling building sign. Our last view of this scene is the girl's school bag with a cute character dangling in the breeze.

The scene changes to overhead power wires. A low frequency hum and muffled voices can be heard. Floating text appears reading "If I remain in a place like this I won't be able to stay connected."

The door to a house opens and a young schoolgirl emerges. It is Lain. She is wearing a typical Japanese school uniform with a short plaid skirt, jacket, and small bowed tie. She rides the train and we again hear the sound of electrical wires. The girl says "Shut up. Why can't you just shut up." For a moment there is silence and then more hum of wires.

As the schoolgirls approach their building, Lain stops and looks at her shadow on the ground. In it, misty whisps seem to float. Lain looks up and watches the girls enter the school. Their images seem to fade into whispy images as well. Floating text appears reading "Hurry everybody".

Lain arrives in her classroom to the sounds of a girl sobbing. We see three girls at the back of the room. The crying girl is Juri and she is comforted by Alice who says "It will be alright". Alice approaches Lain and asks "Did you receive it too?". Lain says "what?", and Alice asks "an email." Lain asks "email?" and Alice says "An email from Yomoda Chisa" Lain indicates that she's not very good at using computers, and Alice chides her "You should check your email every day".

Reika comes up to Lain's desk and says "Lain is still like a kid, isn't she". Lain hears Juri's cry again and asks "Why is she crying?" Reika says "Because she received an email from Yomoda Chisa." Lain asks "Who is Chisa?" Reika explains that Chisa was in Class B -- she was the girl who committed suicide last week. Alice explains that many other classmates received the same mail, and that dead people don't send mail, but somehow it was received.

As Lain is watching the teacher write on the blackboard, the words she sees become fuzzy. Lain is confused. She looks at her hands as the sound of chalk on board echos in the room. Suddenly small outlets appear in her fingers and ectoplasm drifts from them to swirl around the classroom. Floating text appears reading "When you die? It hurts, lol."

Outside again, Lain is walking home accompanied by the hum of the overhead wires. Lain enters her house which seems neat, yet lifeless. No one is home and Lain does not call out with the typical Japanese "I'm home." She enters her large bedroom which contains only a small bed, a desk with books and her computer. Her window ledge is lined with stuffed animals. Lain sits at her desk, dons a bear-eared hat, and turns on her computer. Lain logs into her computer and is informed that she has mail. It is from Yomoda Chisa. Lain chooses to read the email. It reads "Hello. How are you? I went home from school with you once. Do you remember?" Lain says "Yes". The letter continues "I have only abandoned the flesh. This way, I can tell you I am still alive. By sending you this mail I can show you the way. Do you understand? No need to understand now. Soon you will understand it. Everyone will."

Lain asks "Why did you kill yourself?"

The letter continues "It seems there is a rumor that its a prank mail by someone at school. But that's not the case. I want you to understand that." Lain asks, "But why? Why did you kill yourself?" The computer responds, "Because here, God exists." Lain says, "What?"

It's dinner time. Lain, her mother, and sister Mika are eating. As Lain stirs her soup, Mika leaves the table with her food relatively untouched. She explains that she had a late lunch today and thanks her mom for the meal. Lain tells her mother about the mail she received from the dead girl. Her mother doesn't respond. She just keeps on eating.

Lain is now in her bedroom. She lying on her bed with her back to the windowed wall. She is wearing hooded pajamas that are fashioned as a bear-suit. Outside you can hear a car approaching and parking.

Inside his office, Lain's father tinkers with an array of computers. Lain enters and he asks her what she wants, since it unusual for her come into his office. Lain drops the hood on her bearsuit. Humbly, she asks her father for a new "Navi". Her father is amused that she is finally interested in it. He says that now that she is in junior high, she will be outpaced by her friends without a better machine. He says "In this world there are both the real world and the wired. Everyone is connected to each other. And that's how human societies are organized. Even kids like you can get friends quickly. There is no need to be afraid. I wonder why your mom doesn't understand it." Hesitantly Lain says, "I'm not afraid of it." Her Dad asks "But why the sudden interest?" Lain replies "I have to meet a friend." Her father laughs and doesn't respond, preoccupied with his computer.

Lain is on the train again and suddenly the train slams to a halt. An announcement over the PA apologizes for the inconvenience. The train had to be stopped because of an accident. Lain places her hand to the window and watches an electrical wire as blood begins to drip from it.

Now it appears as if Lain is transported to another place, first on the street, then at the bottom of a subway entrance. She sees misty figures dissolving to nothing as they exit. Now she is in a plaza, then her empty living room, and finally at a railroad crossing. Smoke envelops the scene. As she stares down the rail tracks, she sees a girl in a sailor school uniform go under the crossing gate and stand on the tracks. Lain tries to shout at the girl, but no sound comes from her mouth. The girls face is shown alternating between smiling and screaming and ends smiling contentedly as the train finally bears down upon her. Lain crouches beside the tracks as the train passes at blinding speed.

Suddenly we back in Lain's classroom where we see tears falling on paper. She is slumped as sweat and tears drip from her chin. Her teacher, oblivious to her condition, reminds Lain that the information will be on the exam. The English words on the blackboard begin to blur until she sees a message reading "Come to the Wired quickly."

Lain is again walking home from school. As she walks she notices Chisa walking in the opposite direction. Lain turns around to see Chisa standing there. She calls to her "Chisa-chan, where are you?" Chisa just smiles. Then after panning across the reflection of the electrical wires on her glasses, Chisa disappears in a spiraling ribbon. Lain pleads "Wait!"

People are walking in the city. Lain is in her room. She raises an arm towards the ceiling. An electrical cord is wrapped around her arm. A cross walk light turns red. More scenes of the city are presented. Lain connects two electrical plugs. She then attaches an electric conduit patch to her face.

Note from the Cyberia Managers: The first half of this episode consists of a variety of flashback sequences. The sequences do not follow the flow of the story line but rather are presented in some sort of haphazard fashion that ultimately makes… sense. Please consider this as a disclaimer for the content of the first half of this summary. It really will not make much sense until you view it.

It is night time. A bright light illuminates Lain’s bedroom window. The house is quiet. Floating text words appear, “It is now suspicious enough to be called a memory.” Water drips into the kitchen sink which is overfilled with dishes. Clothing is strewn on the floor.

A main menu screen pops up on a Navi screen. It dissolves to show the flow of information through the Wired. The word “Inconvenient Body Hardware” appears on a screen.

Power lines snap and fall to the ground.

A message on a classroom blackboard reads, “I am myself.”

More power lines snap and fall to the ground.

The blackboard now reads, “Lain is Lain.”

Flashback: The mirror ball is spinning at the Cyberia Café and Club. People are dancing. A gunshot causes a stampede of dancers to flee the dance floor. Lain watches as the Accela user shoots himself in the head. His blood splatters onto Lain’s face.

Lain is sitting half dazed on her bedroom floor.

The stock city scenes are shown at an increased rate of speed.

Flashback: Chisa begins her leap off of the building. She says, “You should come here.”

Lain has somehow enabled herself to be a witness to Chisa’s final moments. She is standing a short distance behind Chisa. Lain closes her eyes and looks away as Chisa jumps to her death.

A computer screen scrolls lists of words written in English. An image is present behind the words.

Flashback: Lain and Chisa are walking home from school together. Chisa stops and indicates she must go in a different direction. She waves good bye to Lain.

The floating text words appear and read, “I don’t need to remain here.”

Flashback: Alice is running in her school uniform.

Flashback: Juri and Reika are talking in the city. They are wearing regular clothing.

Flashback: Different quick cut images of the men in black and JJ the DJ of Cyberia.

The words, “Think Different” appear on a screen.

Flashback: Lain is smiling.

Flashback: Mika is standing in Lain’s doorway.

Flashback: Lain opens the door to her parent’s bedroom and finds it to be empty.

Flashback: Lain’s parents are kissing on the couch.

Flashback: Mika stands in the hall and watches the image of herself fade away. Lain approaches her and catches the tail end of this phenomena

A camera seems to lose its signal and breaks up the image of Mika.

A view of the city at night. An onscreen clock indicates that the time is 1:23 am. Text rolls across the screen. It reads, “A biochemical research group at Tachibana Lab succeeded in analyzing the molecular structure of the genome of a human.”

Flashback: Lain watches in horror as a girl in a sailor school uniform runs in front of a train.

The signal strength starts to waver again and images begin to lose their integrity.

Flashback: Taro kisses Lain at the end of their “date”.

Flashback: Lain is in class. Her hand held Navi is blinking with the message, “Lain is a peeper.”

Flashback: Digital Lain watches in horror as the energy of children is used to fuel the KIDS project.

Flashback: People are dancing at Cyberia.

Flashback: The shorter man in black’s visor shatters as a result of Lain’s anger.

Flashback: A chattering Lain head from the Wired lies disembodied on the ground.

Flashback: Lain runs out of her bedroom to go outside and confront the men in black.

Flashback: A newspaper obituary announces the death of Masami Eiri

Floating text words read, “Come.”

Flashback: A digital image of Lain is in the Wired. It is the image viewed by Lain and the men in black’s boss.

Flashback: The godlike image of Lain parts the clouds in the sky for all to see.

Flashback: The digital body parts are conversing with Digital Lain while she is in the Wired.

Lain’s Navi system is utilizing its cooling unit. Pressure gauges begin to spin.

Flashback: Masami Eiri is holding Digital Lain’s hair. He says, “Poor Lain.”

Flashback: A close up is shown of the alien in Lain’s room .

Flashback: Mika and her parents are standing in a row.

A brief montage of images shows Lain and various groups of people.

Flashback: Digital Lain is choking Lain in the Wired. Lain in the Wired says, “Because I am Lain.” Digital Lain yells, “No!”

Flashback: Chisa plummets to the ground.

Flashback: Digital Lain and Masami Eiri have their first in person meeting. He informs her, “Yes. I’m God.”

Flashback: Alice is angry as she says, “You…”

A brief montage of images of Lain is shown.

A long montage of footage of Alice is shown. Most of the scenes seem to demonstrate Alice caring for Lain.

A sentence pops up on a screen. It keeps rewriting the message, “Alice love needs you.”

It is dark outside. A bright light illuminates from Lain’s bedroom window. Lain is slumped on the floor. Electrical cords are wrapped all around her. She has a device clipped to her lower lip. She appears to be exhausted from her work as she melts to a laying position on the floor.

Masami Eiri appears in Lain’s room. Her hovers above her and asks, “Are you tired?” Lain replies, “I’m tired.” Masami says, “You’ve certainly something, as I expected. You downloaded the emulators for all of your Navis into your brain. But that is dangerous. It’s too much for your current brain capacity.” Lain asks him, “Am I a machine?” Masami does not reply. Lain continues, “Don’t talk to me as if I’m a machine…” Masami seems apologetic, “I didn’t mean to. It’s a problem due to software. Lain you are software not hardware.” Lain repeats, “Software?” Masami says, “Yes. You are an executable program of flesh.” Lain shakes her head no and slowly attempts to get up. She is too weak to do so and falls back down. Masami left the room.

The hum of the power lines echo in the night. Digital Lain is walking down a street. She tells the wires, “Shut up.” (Finally! I’m so sick of that hum- Shades) The hum persists so Digital Lain again yells, “Shut up!” The second time was the charm and all is silent. A strange energy form is crouched by a street light pole. It passes before Digital Lain. As it passes out of her vision another image has been left in its path. It is Chisa. Digital Lain’s eyes light up and she says, “Chisa.” Digital Lain walks closer to Chisa. Digital Lain says, “Chisa, I used to walk home with you every day.” Chisa does not reply. Digital Lain continues, “Now I understand what you said, Chisa.” Chisa says, “Lain,” and shakes her head “no”. Lain says, “What?”

A male voice says from behind Digital Lain, “It’s simple to die Lain, isn’t it?” He is the boy who killed himself at Cyberia while high on Accela. He has his laser sight handgun with him. Chisa says, “Death is not simple.” Accela boy corrects her, “It’s simple Lain. You already have a tool for it.” Lain asks, “What?” She looks down and sees his gun is now in her hand. She tests the heft of it. Accela boy says, “I already released the safety. Its trigger is too heavy. Hold it with both of your hands. Push it with your thumb. It’s too heavy for a girl.” Digital Lain turns the gun towards her head. The red laser light pinpoints several targets on her face. Accela boy asks Lain, “Why? Why do you still want to stay in the real World? You called me here.” Digital Lain says, “I can’t.” Accela boy reminds her, “The flesh in not necessary.” Digital Lain disagrees, “No.”

“Lain.” A muffled female voice has called her name. Digital Lain turns to see who it is. Accela boy and Chisa have disappeared. The background around her has changed. Digial Lain now appears to be standing in a ditch with dirt mounds and power lines above her. Digital Lain asks aloud, “What is this?”

A light shines from Alice’s bedroom widow. A female voice says, “We’ll meet him after school tomorrow. He looks pretty good.” Alice is watching a video Navi mail message from Juri. Juri continues in her message, “If you make him your boyfriend everybody will think that the rumor about the teacher is untrue. I’ll tell you more tomorrow. Good bye.”

Alice remains sitting on the floor of her bedroom. She ponders the implications of her situation with the teacher. She thinks to herself, “It is not a lie.” Alice’s door creaks open. Alice looks up and is shocked to see a short figure is at her door. Alice asks, “Who?” It appears to be the alien wearing the stripped red and green sweater. Alice still can’t make out the identity of her guest so she asks again, “Who’s there?” Alice now sees that it is Lain at the door. But Lain has the arms, legs, and stripped green and red sweater of the alien. Alice is upset upon seeing Lain and says, “Lain. Why…because…?” Alice is barely able to say the words. She is still devastated by Lain’s apparent betrayal of her privacy. Alien Lain says, “It was not me. I didn’t peek at your secret. I didn’t spread the rumor in the Wired.” Alice composes herself and moves to sit on her bed. She swallows the lump caught in her throat. Alice says, “It was Lain. Lain did it. I definitely saw you.” Alien Lain defends herself, “It was not me. It would seem that there are many ‘I’s’. The other ‘I’ did it.” Alice is confused. “What are you saying,” she asks. Alien Lain replies, “There may also be more than one Alice.” Alice’s eyes widen in shock. Alien Lain says, “but even if I say it wasn’t me, you’ll still believe it. So I’ll make it so that it never happened. I made all possible efforts to do so.” She seems to be pleased with herself. Alice asks, “What do you mean?” Alien Lain explains, “We no longer need devices. I already broke the barrier between the Wired and the real World. So I can go anywhere I want. So I’m here now. I can make anything that has already happened never have happened.” Alice can only reply, “Lain.” Alien Lain shrinks back towards the door. Alice looks confused and concerned. The image of Lain has disappeared. Alice begins to cry. She repeats to herself, “I’m scared. I’m scared.”

Alice is walking to school. Juri and Reika greet her, “Alice, good morning.” They both seem to be in good moods. Alice is not. She politely returns the greeting, “Good morning,” but there is no real feeling to her statement. Reika does not miss a beat and asks, “What is wrong? You look depressed today.” Juri has a different thought about the cause of Alice’s down mood and asks, “Are you having your period today?” Reika, the queen of insensitivity, uncharacteristically scolds Juri for a comment she herself usually might make. She tells Juri, “You’re so insensitive.” Juri appears to be incredulous at the new, sensitive Reika and sputters, “But…!” Alice says, “Juri, I’m not sure I want to go today.” She is making reference to the plans Juri left on her message regarding hooking up with a new guy. Juri appears to be confused, “What ? What will you do today?” Alice asks her, “Didn’t you give me a [[CU Mail]]?” Juri replies, “What? Yesterday I…” Reika interjects, “Alice you’re acting strange today.” Alice’s gaze shifts towards the school guard gate. Her teacher/lover is checking in with the guard. Reika sees who she is looking at and says, “Alice.” Juri notes, “That teacher looks good.” Reika declares, “There is a rumor that he loves a girl who’s a third year student in this school.” Juri is shocked by this information and says, “Really? That’s immoral.” Alice looks at her two friends. She thinks they are playing with her by pretending not to know that she is the girl in question and says, “Um…a…” They reply in unison, “What? What is it?” Alice says, “I…that teacher…” Juri and Reika look stunned. Reika asks, “What? Is there some relationship between you and that teacher?’ Juri adds, “Could it be? Do you love him?” Alice looks perplexed. Reika and Juri were both aware of her secret affair with the teacher, yet they both are acting like they have no knowledge of it. Reika shoots down Juri’s question by stating, “No. It’s too late.” Juri agrees, “He already has a girl.” Alice casts her gaze downwards. Reika says, “You look unusual today.” Juri adds, “It’s strange.” Alice’s eyes widen. She is beginning to realize that her two friends really do not know about her affair with the teacher. It then dawns on her how this could have come to pass. Alice turns and sees Lain approaching the school. Alice and Lain stare at each other. Juri waves and yells, “Lain! Good morning!” Reika yells, “Hurry up!” Juri repeats this sentiment, “Hurry! Hurry Lain!” Alice studies Lain’s face. Alice thinks to herself, “Lain, did you really…?” Lain smiles at Alice. Alice notes this, “Lain smiled.”

Bear suit

[[Lain Iwakura]]'s bear suit appears several times in the [[Serial Experiments Lain (anime)|anime]]. It provides her with comfort when in intimidating situations, such as when using a [[NAVI]] for the first time in a long time. It also functions as Lain's pajamas.

Lain also has a bear hat that appears only in [[Layer 01]] when she turns on her NAVI.

Although its screentime is very limited, the bear suit has left a powerful impact on the fandom and bear motifs can be seen in a lot of Lain fanart.

A two-storey house located in the Setagaya ward of Tokyo. [[Lain Iwakura]] lives here with her [[family]]: her father [[Yasuo Iwakura]], her mother [[Miho Iwakura]] and her sister [[Mika Iwakura]].

The furnishing is plain and ordinary, except for the large number of [[NAVI]]s that Yasuo has in one room, and later, that Lain has in her bedroom.

The outside of the house is likewise plain. There is a plate that says "Iwakura" outside.

Its address becomes visible on a delivery receipt at one point, where it is listed as being in the fictional neighborhood of Mimorigasaka (美杜ヶ坂) in Tokyo's Setagaya ward.
