==Overview==

The Serial Experiments Lain 2020 eXhibition was an online event held by the Japanese company Anique from October 28, 2020 to October 30, 2023. The event was run in conjunction with NBC Universal's own "#lainTTL" event, which encouraged the posting of Lain-inspired fan works with relaxed copyright enforcement from a period of 2019 to 2028.

The main purpose of the event was to host an online Serial Experiments Lain exhibition, which would allow users to travel through a 3D space and view a variety of Lain official art, fan artwork, videos, and more.

In addition to hosting this 3D exhibit, Anique sold Lain-related merchandise that featured a variety of previously-published official Lain artwork. This merchandise included acrylic stands, phone cases, framed prints, a 3D model for use in VR games, and "digital collectibles".

Anique supported two methods of contributing to the exhibition, described below.

The event allowed internet users to post illustrations, photographs, novels, music, videos, etc. on Twitter with the hashtag "#lain2020". These pieces of artwork would be incorporated into the event, hand-picked to be displayed in the gallery as a tribute to the fans' love of Serial Experiments Lain.

The requirements were as follows:
* Any works submitted via Twitter must use the hashtag "#lain2020"
* You may submit illustrations, photographs, novels, music, videos, etc. - any format is accepted
* Past works (works created before this event) are accepted
* Anything that violates the rules of #lainTTL is not accepted
* Only works produced by the individual submitting them are accepted
* The Anique Twitter account (@anique_jp) should be mentioned to get updates on your artwork

This exhibit allowed fans to submit their "love, feelings, commentary, etc." for Lain as a video or audio file, submitted on a form on Anique's website. The users' spoken voice was "processed and mixed with the voices of the creators of lain", and played as the voice of the "(RUMORS)" in the exhibition.

During the exhibition, a number of pieces of Serial Experiments Lain merchandise were sold by Anique. Many pieces of merchandise could be purchased in either a digital or physical form, and came with a digital "Certificate of Ownership" which could be viewed on the Anique website. This certificate of ownership was limited in scope as it could only be viewed by the owner when logged into their account, could not be exported, and could not be transferred to another user.

A number of key visuals and pieces of official Lain artwork were also sold during the exhibition. These pieces were sold as "unique digital collectibles", which could only have one owner at a time. Once purchased, owners of the artwork could allow or disallow users to send them offers for the artwork on Anique's website, and Anique attempts to track the current estimated value of each piece on their website. Because these pieces of artwork are not NFT or Blockchain-based, these certificates of ownership and unique single-owner collectibles are likely managed solely using the Anique website back-end.

This doll had only one variation, featuring Lain Iwakura wearing the bear suit that was featured in the Serial Experiments Lain anime.

=United States - Subtitled VHS Tapes - 1999=

In addition to the English Dubbed VHS release, a set of English subtitled VHS tapes with original Japanese audio were also released in the United States.

There were a number of changes from the dubbed VHS tapes that made the subtitled variant unique:

* The subtitled VHS tapes use a red mark on the spine of the tape's sleeve to note that the tapes are the subtitled variant.
* The catalog number of each tape (for example, PIVA-2231S) will end in "S" for Subtitled, rather than "D" for Dubbed.
* The subtitled VHS tapes were more expensive than the dubbed variants, with an MSRP of $29.98 per tape.

These differences have been marked in bold in the table below, to make them easier to visually parse.

The VHS releases of Lain differed in each country - in the United States, the series was released as a set of four tapes in paper sleeves. In Japan, it was released as a set of five tapes in plastic cases. The full details of each release and their differences have been included below.

In the United States, Serial Experiments Lain was released as a set of four VHS tapes in paper sleeves. The right side of each tape's sleeve also contained a section of artwork - when all four tapes were aligned next to each other on a shelf, their designs combined into artwork of Lain.

However, this is where my trail fizzled out - I haven't been able to find any additional information that actually provides an authorship date for when this document was made, or how the staff of Serial Experiments Lain would have originally discovered it.

If anyone else would like to take the torch from here and continue searching for the original source or publication location of this article, that would be great! I think it would be very interesting to learn how it landed in the hands of the writers/producers at Triangle Staff.

During the scene in [[Layer 06]] where [[Professor Hodgeson]] explains [[KIDS]] to Lain, the following scrolls by in very small and difficult-to-read print:

with a program that periodically called staff
members and asked them to say 5
names selected at random from 64 full
Japanese names (surname followed by first name).
Using this program, 684 utterances
were recorded from 47 native Japanese speakers
(3/4 of which were male) and tagged with the
utterance transcription.
The utterances were represented as Bark-scale
power spectra of 20 ms speech frames, Hamming
windowed at 5 ms shifts. The
utterances were time synchronously phoneme
labeled using their transcriptions in an
automated process. The results were
manually checked and adjusted to correct
any missegmentations.<br>
From this data we generated our initial models as
described above and used them to bring the automated
attendant system
online. The system, open to about 100 users,
ran as described in section 3,
and after some months we had collected over 350
additional utterances. The newly collected
utterances were briefly checked and a few
mislabeled ones were deleted.<br>
Even with the new utterances, this is not
a large data set (especially considering that
the task is multi-speaker, and recorded
over telephone lines), but we nonetheless
performed the following experiments to assess
the effects of incremental retraining.
The 350 new utterances were added in 4 stages
(preserving their temporal sequence) to the
initial set of 684 (e.g. 684+87,
684+175, ...). At each stage one third of
all the utterances were selected at random and
held out for testing. The remaining
two thirds became the training data,
from which a new set of models was made using
the three step procedure outlined
above. <br>
At each stage we made 2 tests. The first checked basic
recognition accuracy when new models were generated from the
expanded training data and the new testing data was
incorporated into the test set. The second used the new testing data
but no new training data in order to check how well
the original models generalized to unseen data.
These two tests were
conducted on both the models produced by embedded
k-means clustering (step 2 above) and on the
models after minimum
error training (step 3 above).
Results for these tests are shown in Figure 2.

A small machine that, when swallowed, causes a person's brain to operate 12 times faster. Used in [[Layer 02]] by a boy in [[Cyberia]]. Not considered a drug, but traded like one and priced rather exorbitantly; up to ten thousand yen, with the usual price around four thousand.

It is delivered in a paper parcel and held in an organic-looking capsule filled with fluid -- the boy splits the capsule open using a box-cutter and ingests the machine with a swig of beer.

It becomes much more difficult to obtain after the shooting in Layer 02.

In the English language dub of [[Serial Experiments Lain (anime)|Serial Experiments Lain]], the credits of the show do not assign specific character roles to each English dub voice actor. Instead, all cast members were grouped into a single credit, "English Dub Voice Talents".

In the English language dub of [[Serial Experiments Lain (anime)|Serial Experiments Lain]], the credits of the show do not assign specific character roles to each English dub voice actor. Instead, all cast members were grouped into a single credit, "English Dub Voice Talents".

HondaActy: Initial page draft - created to list each of the fan-made Winamp skins that have been created over the years

Winamp is a piece of media player software developed by Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev for Microsoft Windows. The software allows users to listen to a wide variety of audio files from their computer, similar to other MP3 playback software such as iTunes or foobar2000.

One popular feature of the software is it's ability to be heavily customized, allowing users to change the background images, theme, cursor, animations, and more. Over the years, a number of Serial Experiments Lain fans have created Lain-themed Winamp skins for use with the program.
